Some time ago, my brother Thomas moved in with me. He has autism and always lived with our mother, but she recently passed away. Since he couldn’t live on his own and I hadn’t found my true love yet, I decided to let him live with me, though I didn’t have much. I lived in a small house with a combined living room and kitchen, a little bathroom and a bedroom just big enough for two one-person beds. What am I going to do with him if I ever find a boyfriend? Will I ever find a boyfriend while I’m in this situation? All those questions got into me after I chose to take care for him, but now that we’re some months further, I don’t mind anymore. Thomas acts weird and his behavior is bothering me. He’s been so sad the last few days and he won’t say anything to me. Even when I try talking to him while we’re eating, he keeps silent.
Then, on a Monday morning in Winter, someone knocked on the door. I didn’t expect anyone, so I was a bit suspicious about someone who was trying to sell us something. When I opened the door, nobody was there. The only thing I saw was a package of seeds on the floor. I decided to take it inside and open it, but Thomas didn't seem very interested. “Hey Thomas", I said after opening the package. "There was a package of seeds laying on the floor. Apples and bananas. Why would someone give us this?”. Thomas sighed. “Apples and bananas…”
“Do you like the seeds?”, I asked. “Yes. Mom liked apples and bananas". After that, something magically happened. "Are we going to plant these?”, he asked. I nodded immediately. Days of silence and he finally is interested in something! When I can make him happy again with gardening, I will! Although it was freezing outside and I don’t know anything about gardening, I really wanted to make Thomas happy again. And besides, he was already outside, so I decided to help him.
For months, the only thing he was caring about were those plants. He gave them so much love. Even mom didn’t get this much love from him. Unfortunately, most of the plants didn’t make it until Fall. Not because of a lack of love, but just because it was too cold. For a few days now the temperatures are getting higher, but a week ago it was still freezing. However, Thomas couldn’t understand it wasn’t his fault. He became angry and destroyed the last banana tree. Now we were left with only two apple trees. I managed to calm him down, but then he fell on the ground and began crying. “Why can’t I make mother happy, Nina?! Why can’t I even grow some trees?! Why is life so unfair? Nina, tell me!”. We just sat there in the front yard and I hugged him, hoping that he would calm down and stand up. After an hour, he did stand up and wiped his tears away. “Thomas”, I said then. “You already made mother happy by allowing these two apple trees to grow. It doesn’t matter that the rest didn’t make it. These two did. Do you want to take care for these trees together with me?”. He was just standing there, looking at these apple trees. I didn’t even know if he was listening to me.
Suddenly he turned his head to me. “I would like to”. So, that's what we did. Some days we were outside until midnight, just to care for the trees. Several weeks later, there still were no apples to find, but the trees were doing great and we weren’t ready to give up yet. So, some more time passed, and then it happened. On an early Saturday-morning I was watching tv with Thomas. When it’s 8am, the tv shuts down automatically and that’s when Thomas knows it’s time to care for the trees. When we got outside, we were witnessing something magical. We looked at each other and then back to the trees. We couldn’t believe our eyes. The trees were… Shining? From that day, apples and blossoms were growing on the trees. Thomas believes that Mother helped us a little bit. Could it be? No. There's no such thing as ghosts... We did this ourselves and we finally got something back. Right?
Some months later…
My brother Thomas already lives with me for a year now. It seemed like he was sad for a long time because our mother passed away and he missed her. He still misses her, but he believes that she's with us in those apple trees. I thought I wouldn’t be able to make him smile once again, but I prove everybody wrong, and it all began with a package of seeds. I still don't know who left that package at the doorstep, but I'm thankful. You saved my brother's life and helped him laugh again. Was it you, mom? Could it be you?
